48 hours in Munich with a Local

July 5, 2022

Munich with a local is maybe the best way to explore the city when only having 48 hours to see the city sites and beer gardens. What better thing to do than to team up with my all favorite German person – Bea. She has lived in Munich for many years, in different neighborhoods, and truly immersed herself in the Bavarian lifestyle. Munich with a local give you all the inside details that you would not know if not for a local friend. Do you know how to drink the beer properly in Munich? Also did you know that people will be naked in the English Garden and that this is a common practice in Munich and Germany.

1. Eisbach River Surfing

When being in a Munich with a local, they will of course also take you the famous spot like the waves on the Eisbach River, which is at the entrance to the Englischer Garten (park), it attracts surfers and all people to watch the largest and best and most consistent river for surfing in the city-center.

2. The Cultural Heart of Munich: Marienplatz

Marienplatz (square) has been at the center of the city since Munich was founded by Henry the Lion in 1158. It was the point at which all of the new city’s most important streets met. Around you can find an important building like Neues Rathaus, Mariensäule, Rathaus Glockenspiel, Altes Rathaus and Fischbrunnen.

Read more about the sites.

3. The Beer Garden Chinesischer Turm

In 1790 the Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm) was built. The Chinese Tower is a pagoda-style, all-wooden tower with five levels. The 25-meter tall tower has a diameter of 19 meters at ground level and six meters at its top level. The Chinesischer Turm beer garden is the second-largest beer garden in Munich and has about 7,000 seats in the self-serviced area and roughly 500 seats in the serviced location.

Munich with a Local in the Beer Garden

Of course, being in Munich with a local, she or her will tell you all about the local way. And most of all explain to you the menu that is all in German. My favorite was the spicy sausages with curry spice and sauce with potato salad. Best of all, when you buy a beer you are given silver coins, which are of course the return coins for the beer glasses, and when returned money is given back.

4. Munich with a Local Must Include a Day Trip from Munich

Did you know that the Bavarian region is maybe one of the most scenic parts of Germany? I did not know, however being in Munich with a local, I was given the opportunity to escape the summer heat in the city and go to the famous lake of Tegernsee which is a Zungenbecken lake in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany. Bea aka my local friend in Munich took me on a one-hour train ride to Tegernsee, where we performed a very green and serene hike to Berggasthof Neureuth via Winterweg up and Sommerweg down back to Tegernsee.

Have a lovely lunch at top of Berggasthof Neureuth.

Like a Local from Munich you will Swim at Lake Tegernsee

Many locals in Munich do escape the summer heat and go to the lakes outside of Munich. We went to Aran for our midday coffee break before having a siesta by the lake and swimming in the lake.

5. View Point from Olympiaberg

When being in Munich with a local, they know all the must-see spots, and by this, we went biking to Olympia Park and walked up the viewpoint from Olympia Park where you can get a panorama view of Munich for free. Easy-peasy as my dear friend would say. The hike was rewarded with a very filling breakfast at utterly charming corner in Munich.

A Mystery Trip in Munich

I went to Munich with no advanced requirement. Because I wanted a mystery trip and to spend time with my local friend, that is living in Munich. A big thank you to my best friend Bea in Munich, for showing me the city and giving me a great time in the Bavarian Capital.

Bea, My Local Guide in Munich

Bea was without the best local guide I could have for my 48 hours in Munich. She shoved me all the spots to be and not to be. And even translated my menu from German to English. Beatrice made traveling and exploring so leisurely easy, that I almost I forgot that I was traveling, then I arrived to the airport and my flight was delayed for three hours. Well reality must hit at some point. Bea and I did meet in Madrid, if you want to read about the cool neighborhood of Malasana.

I’m shaped by nature. I grew up at the edge of th I’m shaped by nature.

I grew up at the edge of the Stadt peninsula — where the ocean doesn’t negotiate and the wind decides your plans. You learn early to read the sky. To sense the shift before the squall rolls in. To move before the door is pushed open.

The weather isn’t small talk at the coast.
It’s strategy.
It’s timing.
It’s survival.

And the women knew it best.

While the men were at sea, coastal women held everything together — land, livestock, homes, children, community. They didn’t call it resilience. They simply lived it.

They understood something very important that we need to remember well.

You don’t dominate nature.
You collaborate with it.

Today I live in the Lofoten Islands, again surrounded by strong coastal women. Different generation. Same backbone.

To adapt when conditions shift.
To build with the landscape, not against it.
To know when to move — and when to stand firm.

To me, that is a coastal inheritance.

The coast teaches you self-efficacy. Patience. Awareness. Respect.

It shapes women who know that sustainability isn’t about control — it’s about relationship.

And that’s the spirit I carry into my work, my travels, and the future I’m building.

Thank you @dino.serrao for capturing my coastal spirit in this portrait.
2025 was rich in good memories, wonderful times wi 2025 was rich in good memories, wonderful times with family and friends! It went so fast! Many highlights this year! And many great hikes even in Lofoten and Sunnmøre!

2025, I have used less time on my phone more flight mode, more with just being. It will continue onward for 2026. I’m still traveling and doing many mini adventures. Mostly being with loved ones.

In April we were in Cuba, which always disconnect but reconnect you much better with what matters and the importance of being grateful and appreciating what you have in Life. When we travel, how can we travel well, how do we show up at a destination.

My last international travel this year was Lanzarote, famous for its landscape and architecture. Best of all traveling with my sister. We used public buses, eat at different local places and guided tour to the national park. What an island!

I think one word that has been important this year for me is mindful. Be aware, be curious, ask open questions, reflect more before speaking and listen.

Being in nature is the best gift for human nature. We must visit more often. We must focus on our sleep quality.

I think 2025 have been a year of flowing and protecting my energy on what sparks joy to me. The most limited resource we have is time. How can we live the most happy with the time we have. How can we use our time and energy well.

2025 I’m very grateful for the year it was a blessing filled with love laughters, friendship and some important life reflections and some new changes.

2026, welcome let’s embrace and see where the wind takes us this year!

Wishing you all the very best new year filled with abundance, hope and peace. May the year be as good as you want it to be! Or even better as magical as you want ✨🤩
October disappeared in the blink of an eye! 😃 The October disappeared in the blink of an eye! 😃 The start of the month was breathtaking in Lofoten. We welcomed German travel experts for a MEGAFAM trip in the Lofoten Islands and had a blast connecting with new faces and industry colleagues. Truly amazing!!🤩 #lofoten #lofotenislands #megafam #lofoteninfo #visitnorway
Greece is always a good plan! This time we went is Greece is always a good plan! This time we went island jumping to Skiathos and Skopelos. You know the Mamma Mia Islands 🌞 Also Athens, but next post. I think Skopelos has the clearest water I have seen in Europe. So stunning so pure, wow! So green the Island. Could have been away longer as always, but now living slow cabin life before hitting back North. #islandescape #greece #visitgreece #skiathos #skopelos #islandsofadventure
