Bergen the beautiful city by the fjord of Norway, it is a UNESCO World Heritage City. The City of Bergen is a place for culture, architecture and best of all easy access to nature experience of fjord and mountains. When visiting Norway, Bergen has to be on your list! To find your inspiration put on some KYGO, and celebrate that you are visiting his home town soon.
As a Norwegian, I know Norway is not cheap, by this, the things to do in Bergen include budget-friendly options and excellent ways to see and explore Bergen without going bankrupt.
Bergen is the rainiest city in the world, bring rain
Visit Bergen – A World Heritage City!
I would definitely recommend Bergen for either 48 or 72 hours, in that way you have time to walk around and soak up all the beautiful tree houses and the cute streets with cobblestone and different street-art pooping up in different corners. beu
When being in Bergen city there are some must see and do, and then there are some fun parts like eating pastry and getting lost at the colorful neighborhood of Nordnes. We must not forget Bryggen, and it’s importance as a part of Hanseatic League back in the days. Bergen has tons of history and famous people, and it’s a matter of making the best of your short time. In that way, I have created my top 7 things to do in Bergen.
Bergen City: UNESCO World Heritage City, a European City of Culture and the Gateway to the Fjords!
1. Bryggen in Bergen. A World Heritage Site!
Bryggen is the number one place people want to see when entering the city of Bergen in Norway. Bryggen is the site of the olde beautiful Hanseatic wharf and buildings. In the middle age, this area was the hub for all trades, and the most common product was of course dried cod also known as Bacalo. Today we still export dried cod worldwide.
beuaitfuel My recommendation for Bryggen is to walk around the buildings and soak up the atmosphere of being transported back a decade to the age of craftsmanship and the glory days of Bryggen. The best part of being around in Bryggen that is is free to walk around and take pictures, there are museums that can be entered if interested, like the Hanseatic Museum.
2. Fløyen A Panoramic View of Bergen City
I have to say Fløyen is another must do when being in Bergen City, it bring you the most spectacular view over the seven mountains, but also the great fjord. There are two options to view Bergen from above: the Fløybanen Funicular and the Mount Ulriken Cable Car.
I would recommend doing Fløyen if having a short time and being in the city center. Then only pay one way, because then the return will be a lush green forest walk, approximately 3 kilometers down to the city center, which is perfect for getting the stomach ready for the next meal!
Ulriken by Night
Psst! If you want to splurge, and be a bit over the top, I would recommend to go dinning at Skyskraperen Restaurant, which is Bergen’s highest dining place, with a spectacular view in raw nature! This is at Ulriken. And the menu is based on local ingredient presented in a series of different servings.
3. Best Cinnamon-Buns in Norway?
While I was standing on the of top Fløyen, I was hearing people gossiping about the Fløyen Cafe having the best Cinnamon-buns in Norway?! I’m always up for a taste and conclusion. I have to say it was good, it was warm and it was sweet, not the best in Norway, but the best in Bergen! beaytufe
4. Explore the Neighborhood of Nordnes and Street Art in Corners
I would recommend walking shoes in Bergen, because of all the cobblestone, but also because you should be walking around in all different corner of the city and explore some of the vibrant street artists
5. Norwegian Coffee Culture
If you want to understand Norwegians, you have to understand the importance of Coffee and or culture of coffee drinking. We are Norwegians and we have one of the highest consumption of coffee in the world.
We drunk it to socialize or to get a break of the day. In that way, I found to great coffee places in Bergen, with tasty beans and aromas like chocolate and vanilla. If you want to be true Norwegian drink it black. If you need a coffee-break pop into Kaffemisjonen or Kaffekopmaniet, they are close to each other and the best they are close to Fløybanen, perfect stop either before or after visiting the best panorama view of the city.
How Norway is changing the way we drink coffee
6. The Famous Fish Market
It is famous, I don’t know why, dear people from Bergen do not kill me for saying this. Yes, it is a proud moment of Norwegian history when it comes to selling fish. I honestly feel that we should not steal the money to tourists by selling overpriced fish.
I do understand if you want the experience of tasting some excellent Norwegian Seafood, I do. Please look around and see if you can find other places than the fish market. It is stealing your money. Norwegian seafood is one of the best in the world, and is truly mouthwatering to eat. If you want to save money what about going in the supermarket and buy there or even go fishing and catch you own dinner?
7. The Iconic 3 KRONEREN – Best Sausage in Bergen since 1948
3-Kroneren is a treat for the soul and stomach, the place has 24 different sausages to chose between and recipes from Norway, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The biggest sausage is 250 gram.
Remember to get a cup of the famous raspberry lemonade. The prices are around 8-10 US dollars, this can be a budget dinner or night snack after being out on the town, closing at 04:00 in the morning. 3 KRONERENE (three Norwegian Krones) which was the price for the sausage back in 1978, was for sure one of the highlights when visiting Bergen.

Hoggorm – Best Pizza in Bergen
The new kid in town is Hoggorm Pizza and it is a culinary experience if you are tired of seafood and want to taste something new and cool. When Anders Husa is writing about you know it’s a must try! They do not do gluten free pizza and neither bookings! First-come-first-serve policy!
Yes, they do have Bacon & Pineapple pizza, are you going to love or hate it? I’m addicted to pinapple pizza . . .
Packing to Bergen City
First of all, you are packing to Norway, which means packing for all seasons of the year, furthermore, Bergen is called the rainiest city on Earth! 240 days per year! Bring raincoats, waterproof shoes and an
Accoamandation in Bergen
When I spent the weekend in Bergen, I deiced to stay in Thon Hotel Orion, which is less than 3 minutes walk from the famous Bryggen. Furthermore, everything is in close walking distance and the airport bus, stops only two minutes walking from the hotel, which was great.
The rooms were spacious, clean, and modern. Best of all was that bed was like a dream to sleep in, and I woke up feeling refreshed. The breakfast is rich and full of options, they also offer evening food, which is fabulous if you are trying to save money or maybe are tired of going out for dinner. Thon Hotel Ori on was outstanding, and the customer service was excellent. There are other places to stay in Bergen, but the hotel was an excellent value for the money spent. I would recommend for people visiting Bergen.
Traveling to Bergen
Traveling to Bergen can be done in many ways. If you are coming from abroad, like the United States of America or Great Britain, I would highly recommend to check out the low coast Norwegian Airline. They offer some great long-haul offers to Norway.
If you are flying into Oslo and then going to Bergen by other public transportation, I would recommend going to Bergen by train, one of the most scenic trains rides in Europe or was it the world? Then after being in Bergen, maybe it’s time to explore Fjord Norway with some public boats that take you out to Fjord Norway. You have to visit Ålesund the most scenic city in Norway, right next to the world famous Geiranger Fjord and region of Sunnmøre.
If want to go off the beaten track, what about visiting Hoddevik? One of Norway best surfs sports, right at furious Stadt ocean that will give raw nature power and wild nature. Or maybe just go fishing in Fjord Norway?

Ah, how nice Bergen is! I’ve been there more than a decade ago and I always daydream of a return there: the streets are beautiful and life at the port fantastic! Thank you for bringing back such nice memories.
