Jæren is One of 18 Norwegian Scenic Routes

Jæren is one of 18 Norwegian Scenic Routes
Jæren or Jaeren is one of 18 Norwegian Scenic Routes in Norway.

In Norway, we have 18 Norwegian Scenic Routes, that are located around different parts of Norway. Jæren or Jaeren has one of them located right by the ocean side and gives a glimpse of the life at Jæren, which mostly includes agriculture, beautiful landscape, and Norway’s longest beach – Orrestranda.

Many people say that you haven’t seen Norway before you have seen Jæren. And I agree. Because Jæren has a unique landscape that has to be seen because the ocean-view is massive. The light is ever-changing, and the lighthouses are there to guide ships crossing the coast of Jæren to safe passages.

From the Norwegian Scenic Routes

On the Road to Jæren in Norway

We were driving the Norwegian Scenic Routes in Jæren when we were on our Road Trip from Oslo to Southern Norway and back to Western Norway, aka Fjord Norway. We left Lindesnes lighthouse, and then we spent the night at Camp Lyngdal. If you want more upscale, try Lindesnes Havhotel.

Hellaren in Jøssing Fjord

Hellaren in Jøssing Fjord

On our road from Flekkfjord, we went along the North Sea Route, and we decided to stop along with RV 44. In Jøssing Fjord to check out the two houses under Hellaren or Hedlaren. Hellaren forms a natural roof and shelter that has given the people an advantage of thousands of years.

The roof on the two houses has not been changed. Tha’s due to the protection that Helleren has given the houses. Both houses are from the 1800s; some parts of the building might be older. Most likely, there have been settlements since the 1500s.

Tunnelstuo at Jøssingfjord

Tunnelstuo at JøssingFjord

Do you want an extraordinary experience in the outdoor? Tunnelstuo is the ultimate place to sleep in a former operative tunnel built-in 1921. The view from the tunnel down to Jøssing Fjord is breathtaking. The valley has steep mountainside and is a paradise for any mountain climbers. Popular climbing places are Hedlersfjellet and Profilveggen.

Sokndal Village & Salmon Rivers

Sokndal Village & Salmon Rivers

If you like dainty villages, make a stop along the road and visit Sokndal Village. In Sonkndal, there are two rivers for catching salmons; there are hikes and the open sea. The village delivers a small paradise with lot’s of charm, they have no tourists, only guests staying. The hospitality is warm and kind, and if you want to stay the night, then maybe Sogndalstrand Kulturhotell is the place for you.

Kvassheim Lighthouse in Jæren

Kvassheim Lighthouse in Jæren

The Lighthouse of Kvassheim is one of many lighthouses that guided ships along the coast of Jæren. Kvassheim was extinguished in 1990. Now the lighthouse has a small exhibition about its story and also include a small cafe and group accommodation. Highly recommend a walk around the lighthouse to explore the lush fauna and the greenery.

Orrestrand Beach in Jæren

Orrestrand Beach in Jæren or Jaeren, Norway.

Orrestrand is Norway’s longest beach with 5 kilometers of white sandy beach. Take a walk on the beach and enjoy this stunner of scenery with an overwhelming ocean view and, most of all, soft sand kissing your feats.

Borrestrand Beach in Jæren

If you have time, spend at night at Borretunet with a fantastic location, and don’t forget to sign up for surfing if that’s your passion.

After exploring Jæren, you can drive towards the Norwegian Scenic Routes in Ryfylke. Why? Because you will find some of the most spectacular natural attractions in Norway. That means Preikestolen, aka Pulpit Rock, and the Kjerag Boulder with Lysefjorden. Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke is 260 km long and travels between Oanes at Lysefjorden and Håra.
