The Old Mountain Road of Stryn is 1 of the 18 Norwegian Scenic Routes

September 9, 2020
The Old Mountain Road of Stryn

The old mountain road of Stryn is one of my all-time favorite roads in Norway. I think it is because it means soon home. The area of Stryn is famous for its breathtaking nature, but also the old mountain road of Stryn is a piece of art. The old mountain road of Stryn is a true testimony of the masterpiece of the Norwegian road culture. And the design is from a bygone time. Built by manual labor towards the end of the 19th century, it conveys a historical presence. You will not find a road like the old mountain road of Stryn anymore, now you will find tunnels.

The old stone masonry and the long swings around the mountains provide a sense of traveling in lost time. The road has many incredible viewpoints to watch the rounded shapes bearing the ice’s mark and to the west the sharp mountain peaks. Most of all, take a walk down to one of the many turquoise-colored mountains lakes. And then let the old mountain road of Stryn impress you as it has with many other travelers for over a century.

Geiranger Fjord Close to The Old Mountain Road of Stryn

If you are visiting the famous Geiranger Fjord, you can drive over to the mountain of Stryn and drive along The old mountain road of Stryn. The Old Mountain Road of Stryn can also be taken when going from the capital Oslo to Western Norway.

Geiranger to Trollladder (Trollstigen) in Norway, is also one of the 18 scenic routes along Norway.

The Old Mountain Road of Stryn is Norway’s Oldest Tourist Route

Norwegian Scenic Route Gamle Strynefjellsvegen runs from Grotli to Videsæter, a total distance of 27 km (Road 258). The small village of Hjelle also plays an important role in the tourist route since the old road starts at the jetty in Hjelle.

In Norway the Old Mountain Road of Stryn is one of 18 scenic routes to drive.

Practical Information about The Old Mountain Road of Stryn

Nearby Attractions to The Old Mountain Road of Stryn

Via Ferrata Loen

An exciting challenge in spectacular scenery. Via Ferrata Loen starts at the Loen Active shop and takes you up to Mt. Hoven (1011 m.). Fantastic views of beautiful mountains, glaciers, and fjord. Duration 5 to 6 hours.
The Gjølmunne suspension bridge, the longest via Ferrata bridge in Europe, 120 m long. The Gjølmunne wire bridge, 36 m long.

I recommend beginners to book Via Ferrata Loen with a guide from Loen Active.

Loen Skylift from Fjord to 1011 MASL

Loen Skylift is a spectacular new attraction and adventure arena, at the inner part of the Nordfjord, in the heart of Fjord Norway. A Cable Car will lift you from the fjord to 1011 MASL. Enjoy the views of the fjord landscape by the restaurant table, or while exploring in the mountains.

Mt. Skåla with an Elevation of 1843 MASL

Skåla is one of the most glorious tops in the Western Norway mountains. Mt. Skåla is for the people with tremendous high love for the Norwegian mountains and stunning scenery. The hike of Skåla is very demanding, and you need to be in good physical shape. The hike is 14 kilometers up and down. And will take around 6-8 hours depending on your level of fitness and hiking skills. I do not recommend this hike for non-hikers.

Mt. Skåla, you will be rewarded with a spectacular fjord view and the Jostdalsbreen Glacier. If you want, you can spend the night at Skålabu and Skalatårnet, DNT cabins, before going down again.

Appropriate hiking footwear is required. The trail is very well-maintained. In 2009, Nepalese sherpas built a stone trail along with the most demanding parts of the hike, making the climb easier.

Kayak at Lake Lovatnet

Explore one of the most beautiful valleys in the country, with high dramatic mountains, glaciers, and emerald green waters. Join Loen Active on the guided kayak tour and learn about the valley’s dramatic history, and the life people lived here.

Dear Candy, wow how great that you will see much of Norway! All routes should be fine if you have time, and can drive slowly and adjust to the roads. The Old Strynfjellsvegen is my favorite. I hope you have a wonderful time.

Hi Pauline,
Thank you so much for your blog with so many beautiful photos and helpful information!  I am traveling to Norway with my husband next month and now planning our itinerary.   There are sooo many scenic routes in Norway that I would like to do!  The top on our mind are 1) Gamle Strynefjellsveg; 2) Trollstigen; 3) Aurlandsfjellet Snow Road up to Stegastein Viewpoint; 4)Eagle Road to Ørnesvingen Viewpoint and 5) Atlantic Road.  However, I am worried that these routes would be tough for tourists.  The rental car we’ve booked is an automatic compact car…. am wondering if it would be okay to do the 5 routes i mentioned as some of them seem to be unpaved and i am unsure how rough the condition would be….  Hope to have your advice. Thanks a million!

A Norwegian Travel Voice & Trying to Impact the World by Nudging People to Choose More Sustainable Travel.

I’m shaped by nature. I grew up at the edge of th I’m shaped by nature.

I grew up at the edge of the Stadt peninsula — where the ocean doesn’t negotiate and the wind decides your plans. You learn early to read the sky. To sense the shift before the squall rolls in. To move before the door is pushed open.

The weather isn’t small talk at the coast.
It’s strategy.
It’s timing.
It’s survival.

And the women knew it best.

While the men were at sea, coastal women held everything together — land, livestock, homes, children, community. They didn’t call it resilience. They simply lived it.

They understood something very important that we need to remember well.

You don’t dominate nature.
You collaborate with it.

Today I live in the Lofoten Islands, again surrounded by strong coastal women. Different generation. Same backbone.

To adapt when conditions shift.
To build with the landscape, not against it.
To know when to move — and when to stand firm.

To me, that is a coastal inheritance.

The coast teaches you self-efficacy. Patience. Awareness. Respect.

It shapes women who know that sustainability isn’t about control — it’s about relationship.

And that’s the spirit I carry into my work, my travels, and the future I’m building.

Thank you @dino.serrao for capturing my coastal spirit in this portrait.
2025 was rich in good memories, wonderful times wi 2025 was rich in good memories, wonderful times with family and friends! It went so fast! Many highlights this year! And many great hikes even in Lofoten and Sunnmøre!

2025, I have used less time on my phone more flight mode, more with just being. It will continue onward for 2026. I’m still traveling and doing many mini adventures. Mostly being with loved ones.

In April we were in Cuba, which always disconnect but reconnect you much better with what matters and the importance of being grateful and appreciating what you have in Life. When we travel, how can we travel well, how do we show up at a destination.

My last international travel this year was Lanzarote, famous for its landscape and architecture. Best of all traveling with my sister. We used public buses, eat at different local places and guided tour to the national park. What an island!

I think one word that has been important this year for me is mindful. Be aware, be curious, ask open questions, reflect more before speaking and listen.

Being in nature is the best gift for human nature. We must visit more often. We must focus on our sleep quality.

I think 2025 have been a year of flowing and protecting my energy on what sparks joy to me. The most limited resource we have is time. How can we live the most happy with the time we have. How can we use our time and energy well.

2025 I’m very grateful for the year it was a blessing filled with love laughters, friendship and some important life reflections and some new changes.

2026, welcome let’s embrace and see where the wind takes us this year!

Wishing you all the very best new year filled with abundance, hope and peace. May the year be as good as you want it to be! Or even better as magical as you want ✨🤩
October disappeared in the blink of an eye! 😃 The October disappeared in the blink of an eye! 😃 The start of the month was breathtaking in Lofoten. We welcomed German travel experts for a MEGAFAM trip in the Lofoten Islands and had a blast connecting with new faces and industry colleagues. Truly amazing!!🤩 #lofoten #lofotenislands #megafam #lofoteninfo #visitnorway
Greece is always a good plan! This time we went is Greece is always a good plan! This time we went island jumping to Skiathos and Skopelos. You know the Mamma Mia Islands 🌞 Also Athens, but next post. I think Skopelos has the clearest water I have seen in Europe. So stunning so pure, wow! So green the Island. Could have been away longer as always, but now living slow cabin life before hitting back North. #islandescape #greece #visitgreece #skiathos #skopelos #islandsofadventure
