The Wine Route of Ribera del Duero Region
2012 Ribera was rewarded with a Wine Star Award for being:
The Best Wine Region in the World
Zamora, Aranda, Peñafiel + Salamanca
Three girls decided it was time to explore something outside of Madrid. We went on the Wine Route of the Ribera del Duero region. Experience Spain’s wine region and taste the multitude of wine varieties in Castile and León.
Ribera del Duero in 48 Hours
Our Travel Route
We signed up for a wine tour organized by BeMadrid. It was a great trip with many sites, excellent value for money, and best of all, a fantastic time with friends!
Aranda de Duero
Our first visit was Aranda de Duero in Burgos, the capital of the Ribera del Duero wines and famous for their gastronomy. In Aranda, we visited the historic Bodega Don Carlos and afterward to an underground bodega where we had a wine tasting below the town center’s streets. In the Wine cellars underground, we learned about the wine’s qualities from the region and sampled the different wines from the area.
After the wine tasting, it was free time for exploring Aranda. By this, we found the perfect bar to taste the delicious local taps and skip some wine and drink cañas! Embrace yourself in the crowded culture of eating in the bar, and attack whatever your eyes want to eat!
PRADOREY Winery
When the lunch break ended, it was time to move on to the most critical bodega in Ribera del Duero, PradoRey Winery. At the winery, we were given the wine tour and the way of Pradorey winemaking, and we followed the same route the grapes followed to become wine. In the winery, we had a guided tasting of two PRADOREY wines accompanied by the snack of Iberian charcuterie with gourmet cheese and Pradorey olive oil.
The White wine Pradorey Verdejo: Was high in color intensity filled with aromas, hints of white flowers, and exotic tropical fruits, pineapples, and lychees but without becoming sweet. An elegant and expressive wine with a crisp finish.
The Red wine Pradorey Roble was purple-red with a bluish rim; fresh notes filled with red and dark berries, cherries, and notes of vanilla. A gentle wine with a berry aftertaste.
Peñafiel Castle
Driving towards the Peñafiel Castle is like entering the scenery of Game of Thrones. The medieval influence of the region with changing fall colors makes this an unforgettable memory in the sunset. Peñafiel Castle was a perfect stop for taking beautiful pictures from the top of the castle and enjoying the panorama view of the wine region.
Zamora
Zamora is the capital of Zamora province in the Castile and León region northwest Spain, close to Portugal’s border. It has the most Romanesque churches (24) in all of Europe. The most fun part of being in Zarmoa is the castle. A Middle Ages fortress that stands northwest of the city’s cathedral. It has magnificent views of the town and the river. The fort features Pre-Roman foundations and a general Romanesque structure built between the 10th and 12th centuries.
Salamanca
On our way home from Zamora, it was time for a pit-stop, and we explored Salamanca, the city with a history dating back to the Celtic era. It’s known for its ornate sandstone architecture and the Universidad de Salamanca.
The University of Salamanca was founded in the 1100s and an important intellectual center in the 15th-16th centuries; it adds to the city’s vibrancy with its international student population. Our opinion was that Salamanca was the most beautiful city for this trip in the northwest of Spain.
Wine Route of Zamora, Aranda & Peñafiel
We had 48 lavish hours outside of Madrid! First, we tasted some of the best wines the region has to offer, and then we were given a complete introduction to the skills of wine tasting and the whole process of winemaking.
I even celebrated my birthday in an underground restaurant eating ten kilos of ribs and drinking the cheap red wine that you put soda in, due to not making the hangover deadly for the next day. I held a Spanish speaker, and then we went to the streets of Zamora and celebrated even a bit more the birthday before crashing into the hotel bed around 05:00 in the morning.
Then Sunday, we had a fresh morning walk in Zamora and a beautiful afternoon in Salamanca! Our favorite city of all the towns we explored in the 48 hours was Salamanca. We also loved the sensational good tapas in Aranda. The PRADOREY wine is, by far, my favorite wine in Spain!
