Toledo is a perfect day trip from Madrid, either by train, bus or car. It takes between 1-2 hours depending on your transportation. The Old City of Toledo is a historic center and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old city is a melting pot of Jewish, Islamic and Christian cultures, and this blend influences many of the buildings.
After 5 minutes walking in the Old City of Toledo, we were lost, Notli and I. Somewhere in medieval walls, in a labyrinth of winding pedestrian streets where we. It doesn’t matter when you are lost in between the magnificent old stone building and quiet cobblestone streets that are telling history from decades of time.
Strolling around and bumping into Cathedral of Toledo, the Mirador del Valle, The Monastery of San Juan de Los Reyes and Puente de San Martin. Our lesson learned in Toledo is that you will have a higher pleasure of all these fantastic buildings with doing a walking tour and get closer to the history and the places.
The Puerto Rican and the Norwegian decided to explore something as strange as the torture museum, which is somewhat a bizarre thing to do, but in the same way a bit intriguing. After the visit, we needed to drink to forget, in the corner right around the torture museum; we found a local pub with a great selection of craft beer from, Spain. Nothing better than smooth beer after being scared for life.
Then after some beers, it was the second biggest mission of the day, which was food. After walking out from the center and a bit down to the edge of the town, we discovered our lunch place. The perfect Spanish atmosphere, old men behind bars, seeing you, doing five things at one time, and still making jokes with the guest. After 30 minutes in the bar waiting for a table, we ordered different tapas to share, but the favorite was the squid. Then for dessert, it was cake and coffee. Or day was getting closer to an end in Toledo around 17:00; it was time to get back on the road and stroll down to the bus and back to Madrid.
Toledo – The City of Three Cultures
Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities peacefully coexisted.
Toledo is the perfect day trip from Madrid; I highly recommend doing Toledo if you are spending more than a week in Madrid.
