Little did I know that Trondheim and Trøndelag were representing the essence of Norway. Trondheim is a friendly city that delivers the elongated Trondheim fjord, high mountains, history, northern light, eagles, and also the leading food region in Norway with an excellent culinary experience.
Trondheim is Norway’s third-largest city with over 190 000 people, and as a student city, it is full of life, wanderlust, and courage. Furthermore, people are rounded and hospitable with a smile. If spending some days in Trøndelag or even just 48 hours in Trondheim city, these are some of the great things to do in the city center.
Trondheim the City in the Middle
There are fjords and landscape in the most delightful interaction
1. Norway’s Leading Local Food Region
I honestly did not know that Trondheim is Norway’s leading local food region, that’s coming from a Norwegian girl. It makes sense because Trøndelag and Trondheim are in the heart of the sea and the thick forest. The region has a tremendous natural asset, and you can go diving every day for the world’s best scallops! Trondheim is a Mecca for foodies. Save you grand dinner plans for Trondheim, coming from a girl living in Oslo. In Trondheim several restaurants rank among the best in Scandinavia, many offers 5 Cours Meals with Wine pairing, this is not cheap, but an experience for life, that should be splurged one day when being in Trondheim, Norway.
- Røst Teaterbistro
- To Rom og Kjøkken
- Fagn
- Folk og Fe
- Bula
Other low key areas are Ladekaia for some easy food and a great coastal view, if you want a burger then check out Bror burger place in the city center and if you’re going to be at the sunny side go to Solsiden for a fjord view at the city.
2. The Nidaros Cathedral
The cathedral is built over the tomb of St. Olav, the Viking king, who is known as the patron saint of Norway. The Nidaros Cathedral is the most famous landmark of Trondheim and has to be visited and explored. The building of the cathedral started in 1070 and was completed around 1300.
Pilgrims from across Europe have walked to Nidaros – the old name of Trondheim. Furthermore, Nidaros architecturally speaking is the world’s northernmost Gothic Cathedral. One of the recommendations is climbing the 172 steps of the Cathedral tower and be spoiled with a spectacular view of the city.
3. Bakklandet & The Cute Houses
Bakklandet is the soul of the intimate city center of pedestrian streets, cobblestone, and wooden building that makes you fall in love with Trondheim. Go strolling for an hour or two around Bakklandet and discover many of the cute corners and colorful tree houses, maybe step by Bakklandet Blomster for flower inspiration or the local coffee shop. Don’t forget the famous pictures of the Wharves in the old city bridge.
4. Local Craft Beer & Microbrewery
Trondheim has some lovely microbrewery that is absolute to be tasted. My favorite is ØX Tap Room, which has a great selection of different brews. We need to remember the pioneer Microbrewery and EC Dahls Brewery, which is the local beer everyone drinks on tap if ordering a regular Pilsner.
5. Ladekaia & Fjord View
Lade Trail is the perfect spot for a Sunday walk or any other day! Walk from the City center towards Lade Trail (Ladestien). The tranquility of nature will surround you — 10 miles of coast and saltwater blowing into your hair. The trail has beaches and sheltered bays either for swimming or chilling, furthermore some hilltops for the panorama view over the fjord of Trondheim.
Have a coffee break at Ladekaia or have lunch! The menu is tasty, and if you are coming in by the evening maybe you have a romantic sunset! It is also the perfect spot for Northern light. Back in the day they Laddekaia was used for storing ammunition during the second world war.
6. Solsiden
If you have been to Aker Brygge in Oslo, well then you know the concept of Solsiden, it is a cozy place to meet by the water in the city center for either a glass of wine or full dinner experience.
7. Munkholmen
If the weather is sunny, maybe go exploring the Island of the monks. The islet has served as a place of execution, a monastery, a fortress, prison, and a World War II anti-aircraft gun station. Today, Munkholmen is a popular recreation site either go exploring history or go sunbathing and swimming.
7 Great Things to Do in Trondheim

Furthermore, Trondheim is the place to truly explore the Norwegian cuisine and many of the exceptional resources that come out of the soil, climate, and sea currents.
