7 Crucial Things to Do in Santorini
When Having Only 48 Hours
Things to do in Santorini are endless; there are some crucial things to do in Santorini that should be completed before exploring more of the beautiful island. These seven essential things are listed here to give you the best taste and start of exploring Santorini Island.
My sister and I visited Santorini for only 48 hours at the beginning of our 10 days Greece Itinerary. It was short, but a fantastic start to our vacation!
When we went to Santorini Island, we decided to stay at Imerovigli in the lovely Ampelonas Apartments, which had great location and perfect surroundings.
1. Fira to Oía Walk
One of the greater things to do in Santorini is the scenic hike along the Caledera from Fira to Oía. I would recommend doing this hike for getting the real feel of the Caledera; you would undoubtedly get that with the 3 hours walking. It is well-marked; it should not be a problem with getting lost. I recommend doing this by sunrise our as early as you can. If starting the hike at midday, the receptionist in the hotel will wonder where your mental health went. The same applies to the old man in the church halfway to Oía.
7 Tips on Performing the Fira to Oía Hike
2. Walk & Take Extensive pictures of Oía
When being in Oia, you should go around and take pictures everywhere you can. Make sure that before leaving Oía, you have all the images you want to have of Oía.
Maybe drop the sunset at Oía and take pictures of the majestic view of the town. When the sun is down the blue hour is up, and that changes the light perfectly. Make sure to get Oia’s Famous three Blue Domes and the most important: Getting that Postcard shot of Oía & Santorini (A photography guide to Santorini).
3. Aegeon, Dining with a View of Imerovigli
When being on vacation sometimes you have to splurge a bit. Our last day in Imerovigli this is what we did. We decided to go for dinner at Aegeon Restaurant, which to our surprise had a magnificent view of Imerovigli town and the Caledera. Perfect for sunset dinner. We ranged in the blue hour, and the view was a delight. For the food, it was lovely, tasty and a bit more pricey. I assume we were paying for the view as well. Who cares when it is a perfect atmosphere in the room and an enormous lemon tart for dessert, we could not ask for more.
4. Rent an ATW and be careful driving
Red Beach, Kamari Beach, Mesa Gonia, Exa Gonia, Santo Vinery, and Sunset view
When it comes to things to do in Santorini, I highly recommend renting an ATW. Having transportation like an ATW is how you can see the whole Island in your terms. I love this way of exploring. There is no one telling you to move on (or maybe if you are like me and want to see a significant portion). When having the ATW for the day, you should go to the Red Beach, Kamari Beach, Mesa Gonia & Exa Gonia Exploring Lost Village & Art Space, then finished the day off at Santo Winery with a fantastic sunset view.
Remembe: Metaxi Mas tavern in Exo Gonia is one of the best on the island. (Open 2 PM) Book table.
5. The Red Beach for Photos & Swim?
The red beach has beautiful scenery in the landscape and is completely red. It is extremely crowded in August. It depends on how much time and patient you have to go swimming there. We decided to go for pictures and no swim; it seems like a lot of work to swim in a crowd. We decided to have our lunch stop in Kamari beach and went relaxing for some hours there while the heat was on it´s hardest.
6. Santo Winery with Sunset View
Spectacular View & Amazing Wine Tasting Experience
One of the fun things to do in Santorini is Santo Winery, which gives you the excellent pleasure of tasting delicious local wine from Santorini. I believe that wine is good for health. Cheers for that! I ended up not doing a wine tour. Just a simple wine tasting of six different wines with the cheese platter for 20 EUR. Of course, I had my wine favorites, and you have to find yours. The view is outstanding with or without a sunset and if you don´t drink go there and have something alcohol free and enjoy the view as well.
7. Walk & Take Extensive pictures of Imerovigli
We stayed in Imerovigli at the comfortable Ampelonas Apartments, which was the perfect base for things to do in Santorini. Imerovigli is in between Oía and Fira, the highest town area in Santorini, and this gives a great view of the caldera, volcano, and the sunset. When being in Imerovigli, there should be some walking in the small quirky streets.

Hi Johnny, thank you for sharing! Yes, the wine tasting is probably not more interesting. It was nice tasting wine from a new place I never consider for it´s wine before. I really loved the mineral flavor that the Santorini wine had. Next time I will have to check the Windmills 🙂
I would definitely keep the Fira to Oia walk in my top list of Santorini. I skipped the red beach as people I spoke to said it was a rather ordinary one, and I dont know if a wine tasting in Santorini is more interesting than in France, Germany, Georgia, California? I would include Vlychada with its nearby unrestored windmills and also the Thira Prehistorical Museum 🙂
