7 Great Things to Do in Flåm

September 19, 2020
Flåm & Aurlandfjord, Norway.

Flåm is where everything is melting together as the perfect backdrop for a Norwegian adventure: Flåm Railway, Aurlandsfjord, UNESCO protected Nærøyfjord, famous Flåm bakery, tasty beer, hiking, and biking. Flåm is located innermost in the Aurlands fjord, an arm of the Sogne fjord.

Flåm located innermost in the Aurlands fjord in Norway.

1. Flåm Railway – A Scenic Train Journey

Flåm Railway, the most scenic train journey in Norway and the world.

From Flåm to Myrdal, you will find one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, and it takes only two hours. It will take you to trough a breathtaking mountain scenery, while the train climbs 866 meters – 2841 ft to Myrdal station. If you want to skip the crowd, you can leave early or in the evening. Or even in spring or fall. The Flåm Railway is a tourist destination, but a spectacular one and should not be missed by any chance.

2. The Spectacular Nærøyfjord

When staying in Flåm, you are close to the famous UNESCO World Heritage site of Nærøyfjord or Naerøyfjord. Get thrilled away with dazzling waterfalls and mountains, reaching 1800 meters (5900 ft) above sea level. The best wat to explore a fjord in Norway is by being on the fjord. I highly recommend doing a cruise on Nærøyfjord.

Another famous fjord in Norway is Geiranger Fjord

3. The Famous Flåm Bakery

Flåm Bakery in the town center of Flåm, Norway.

Flåm Bakery is in the heart of the town center and is most likely the building the has a line outside. Why is the bakery famous? It is the only bakery in Flåm, which is incredible when thinking about how many tourists visit Flåm in a day. As always, we are hunting for the best cinnamon buns in Norway. The cinnamon buns from Flåm Bakery are high on the list! Do get yourself a cinnamon bun if being in Flåm. Remember to get your sandwich if you are biking from Myrdal to Flåm.

4. From Finse to Flåm by Bike

If you stay in Flåm, you can take the bike ride from Myrdal. Or maybe you want a more adventure bike ride and will be starting from Finse for biking Rallarvegen. Assuming that you are doing it from Finse, then you must not forget the three-course dinner and breakfast homemade bread and local producers. The stretch from Finse to Flåm is scenically a little piece of Norway.

Check out: Finse1222 (I hope, I can do this trip next year!).

Finse – Flåm 55km (34mi) (5-7 hours)

Myrdal/Hallingskeid – Flåm 32km (20mi) (3-5 hours)

At Finse you start your ride at 1,222 meters (4,000 feet) above sea level, going to the highest point of Rallarvegen, Fagernut at 1,349 meters (4,400 feet) above sea level. Here you’ll find a warden house with a café and a museum.

5. Ægir Brewery & Pub (Aegir)

After a whole day exploring Flåm and around, you may want to take a step into Ægir, the local brewery, and also the local beer of Flåm. Maybe you even go for a seven beer tasting menu, to feel the different flavors. If you have tasted the Norwegian tap water, you probably know why beer also tastes excellent in Norway, but with some more flavors. Ægir also has a great pub meal in the Viking spirit. I highly recommend a Viking dinner experience.

6. Viking Valley in Gudvangen

If you have been watching the Vikings, why not get a realistic view of the Viking life when visiting Gudvangen. Njardarheimer is an authentic Viking village and will take you 1000 years back in time. In Njardarheimr, you are invited to participate in a society where people are eager to convey the history of the Vikings: how they traveled, boat history, and how the Viking era has affected the history today

7. Stegastein Viewpoint in Aurland

Aurlandfjord in Norway, next to Stegastein Viewpoint. Only 10 mintues drive from Flåm.

If you have a road trip through Norway, I recommend doing Stegastein Viewpoint in Auraland when leaving Flåm. Aurland Mountain Road is part of 18 Scenic Mountain Roads in Norway, and starts in Aurland and cross over a spectacular mountain pass in Norway. From the Aurlandsfjord up the mountains, from the lush greenery to the stony wasteland and the high mountains. The contrasts are more incredible than ever on the old mountain road of Aurland. Remember to stop at Vedahaugane for enjoying the panoramic view.

Flåm & Aurlandfjord, Norway.

Aurland Mountain Road

The road is closed in winter but the stretch from Aurlandsvangen is open as far as the viewing point at Stegastein all year round. The highest point is 1,306 meters above sea level.

Other Places to Explore in Flåm

If having more time in Flåm, you can go exploring the Flåm Railway Museum, or even go to the picturesque village of Undredal. You can also go hiking to the waterfall of Brekkefossen. If you want shopping, make a visit to the factory of the famous Aurland shoe.

Accodamtion in Flåm

Staying the night in Flåm, I recommend checking Fretheim Hotel, the hotel we decided to stay there ourselves, and very happy about the service and the quality of the beds. Fretheim is an iconic hotel that has been there since the beginning of 1800, and when English lords use to fish and hunt in Sognefjord. If you want to experience a microhouse, check out this Tiny house with a terrace in Flåm.

Nearby Attractions to Flåm

If being on a road trip in Norway, Flåm is probably one of many stops along the road, and maybe you were coming from Bergen? Or did you travel from Haradanger to Flåm? And perhaps you will be traveling from Flåm and Aurland towards Lærdalsøyri, the administrative center of Lærdal Municipality. The Old Lærdalsøyri are with well preserved wooden houses from 1700 – 1800. A unique attraction in Western Norway, and a perfect lunch break.

A Norwegian Travel Voice & Trying to Impact the World by Nudging People to Choose More Sustainable Travel.

I’m shaped by nature. I grew up at the edge of th I’m shaped by nature.

I grew up at the edge of the Stadt peninsula — where the ocean doesn’t negotiate and the wind decides your plans. You learn early to read the sky. To sense the shift before the squall rolls in. To move before the door is pushed open.

The weather isn’t small talk at the coast.
It’s strategy.
It’s timing.
It’s survival.

And the women knew it best.

While the men were at sea, coastal women held everything together — land, livestock, homes, children, community. They didn’t call it resilience. They simply lived it.

They understood something very important that we need to remember well.

You don’t dominate nature.
You collaborate with it.

Today I live in the Lofoten Islands, again surrounded by strong coastal women. Different generation. Same backbone.

To adapt when conditions shift.
To build with the landscape, not against it.
To know when to move — and when to stand firm.

To me, that is a coastal inheritance.

The coast teaches you self-efficacy. Patience. Awareness. Respect.

It shapes women who know that sustainability isn’t about control — it’s about relationship.

And that’s the spirit I carry into my work, my travels, and the future I’m building.

Thank you @dino.serrao for capturing my coastal spirit in this portrait.
2025 was rich in good memories, wonderful times wi 2025 was rich in good memories, wonderful times with family and friends! It went so fast! Many highlights this year! And many great hikes even in Lofoten and Sunnmøre!

2025, I have used less time on my phone more flight mode, more with just being. It will continue onward for 2026. I’m still traveling and doing many mini adventures. Mostly being with loved ones.

In April we were in Cuba, which always disconnect but reconnect you much better with what matters and the importance of being grateful and appreciating what you have in Life. When we travel, how can we travel well, how do we show up at a destination.

My last international travel this year was Lanzarote, famous for its landscape and architecture. Best of all traveling with my sister. We used public buses, eat at different local places and guided tour to the national park. What an island!

I think one word that has been important this year for me is mindful. Be aware, be curious, ask open questions, reflect more before speaking and listen.

Being in nature is the best gift for human nature. We must visit more often. We must focus on our sleep quality.

I think 2025 have been a year of flowing and protecting my energy on what sparks joy to me. The most limited resource we have is time. How can we live the most happy with the time we have. How can we use our time and energy well.

2025 I’m very grateful for the year it was a blessing filled with love laughters, friendship and some important life reflections and some new changes.

2026, welcome let’s embrace and see where the wind takes us this year!

Wishing you all the very best new year filled with abundance, hope and peace. May the year be as good as you want it to be! Or even better as magical as you want ✨🤩
October disappeared in the blink of an eye! 😃 The October disappeared in the blink of an eye! 😃 The start of the month was breathtaking in Lofoten. We welcomed German travel experts for a MEGAFAM trip in the Lofoten Islands and had a blast connecting with new faces and industry colleagues. Truly amazing!!🤩 #lofoten #lofotenislands #megafam #lofoteninfo #visitnorway
Greece is always a good plan! This time we went is Greece is always a good plan! This time we went island jumping to Skiathos and Skopelos. You know the Mamma Mia Islands 🌞 Also Athens, but next post. I think Skopelos has the clearest water I have seen in Europe. So stunning so pure, wow! So green the Island. Could have been away longer as always, but now living slow cabin life before hitting back North. #islandescape #greece #visitgreece #skiathos #skopelos #islandsofadventure
